The most common crop in our district is the potato crop. Some people say that when there is no potato the dinner is no good. At my home there is an acre of ground sown with potatoes every year. A cousin of my own ploughs it into ridges. When tillage is being done the potatoes get first preference because it is the principal food of the country. Some years the amount of potatoes may vary or decrease because the blight may burn the stalks and ruin the potato. The best growing potatoes are the Champions, Kerrs, Pinks, Flounders, Epicures. When Autumn comes the potatoes are dug with the spade (drawing here) and picked with the hand and stored in pits. There are various kinds of potatoes and here are some of their names: Champions, Kerr, Pinks, Flounders, Epicures, Great Scots, Aran Banners, Up to Dates, Irish Queens, May Queens.Linda Nilson
