Local Marriage Custom In my district marriages occur frequently but is is only the relatives of the husband and wife that attend. Long ago there was a great difference because when the people heard of a marriage taking place they would go to the church and form processions and the other ceremonies. Now all those old customs are abolished and new ones practiced. When the husband and wife are leaving the church the onlookers throw rice or confettie on them. The wedding feast is usually held in the house of the husband or wife. Marriages are not carried out during Shrove or on a Shrove Tuesday nor during Lent. Sometimes money is given to the husband or wife as a dowry and also land and stock. Another custom which is practiced even nowadays is when weddings are in progress strawboys.Rachel Nornes
