Away back in the fifteenth century when the English were at war with our own countrymen great numbers of men were slain on each side as a result of heavy fighting. On this particular day the English had on their side a Scotch Regiment called in those days "Petticoat Loose." On this same day this Scotch Regiment met the Irish in deadly combat and the Scotch were almost wiped out in the encounter. The Irish gave them a chance of taking their dead and wounded off the field; this they carried out to the best of their ability, but one Petticoat Loose was left behind in a clump of [?] [furze]. He struggled into it when wounded and he was found dead later on by a local farmer, who (on seeing him with his musket beside him) got a bad fright. He was buried by the Irish just inside the ditch of the old road convenient to where he died.
Then for years after, the people of the locality were terrified at night by the apparition of the Petticoat Loose, walking up and down the road with his musket on his shoulder, convenient to the place where his body was buried a short while before. In a very short time the old road was hardly travelled at all by the local people, especially after dark as a result of the appearance of this dangerous looking spirit almost nightly and always at the same place.

There are two graveyards in the Parish two cathaloc graveyards and an old protestant graveyard. They are all in the townland of Mayo Abbey they are still in use, but a lot of people aretaking new graves in the new graveyard. None of the graveyards is round in shape. They are sloped.

Once upon a time there lived in Clare a man by the name of Mickie Kelly who was very fond of card-playing. He used to go out at night and come home in the morning. On Sunday morning he never went to Mass. At about six o'clock one Sunday morning he was coming home and he met a man who asked him to have a game of twenty-five, he said he would, at that, the stranger pulled out a small folding table and they started to play. After a while Mickie stooped down to pick up a fallen card and he saw the cloven feet of the stranger. After that Mickie Kelly fell ill and when he got better he never played a card afterwards.

My townland is Rabbitpark situated in the parish of Ardagh, County of Longford, and in the Barony of Ardagh.
The old name was Bhaile an Sagairt and I think this is how it got it's name. Long ago there lived 3 mendicant friars. They lived in a little house, but two men became joint owners of the townland, and evicted them. One old man went across the river towards Killin Mills. The then Mrs Baxter saw him coming and fearing he would wet his feet she carried him on her back to her house. He said 'the Baxter's enemies would never get the better of them'. The other two went to Farrells of Graffogue. People came to them for cures. There are 6 slated houses and two thatched houses in Rabbitpark. There are thirty-six people living there now. To my knowledge 6 people emigrated, 5 to America, and one to South America. There were 9 or 10 more houses in it long ago but only the ruins of three are to be seen now. People say that a white lady appears when trouble is coming to Rabbitpark. Years ago the cows used to be milked at night, and the butter used to be brought out of it. In one house they had to avoid this by churning on a Sunday. The principal old family names are Corcoran and McCormack.

In towns land of Cappincur in parish of Killeigh lived a man
named Purcell. Coming on day from Tullamore he saw an ass

the red turf was put under and over the bastable. It was also baked on a grid iron , but the fire should not be very hot under it.
The bread had to be turned on this grid iron, but it was a smaller, and a lighter cake, than that baked in bastable.

Dromcony is in the parish of Gorletteragh and in the barony of Carrigallen. There are sixteen families living in it at present including four families of Dillon's and four families of Mitchell's. Two other families the Kelly's and the Murray's left it long ago.
There was another family of Mitchell's in Drumcony and they all died with a fever. A road goes from the north side into the bog. It ends in the bog. It is called the bog road.
A great number of people in Drumkielvy and Mullaghbrack have turfbank in Drumcomy bog. They draw the turf out by this road. That is why it is called the bog road. There is a cave in it under a little hill in Paddy Dillon's land.

Long ago there was a famous highway man who plied his trade on the road from Ennis to Limerick. All travellers travelled in fear and dread when going to Limerick. There was no railway then running between the two towns, so that the people had to go by road. One moonlight night after robing some rich travellers he was galloping along when he spied a company of Yeomanry coming along. He quickly dismounted and hid his booty in a rick of turf near by. Then re-mounting quickly made his escape to his hiding place in the Cratloe Woods. The soldiers hearing of the robbery remained for some time in the locality searching for the highway man so that it was a long time before the highwayman could come back to get his stolen money. Now it happened that the place where the solitary rick of turf in which he hid the money

On St Brigid's Day a sheaf of corn is divided in the shape of a cross. On one arm of the cross is placed a potato and on the other end you placed oats. When you are sowing the potatoes you will sow this potato first and when you are sowing the oat you sow this oats first.

The thatcher earns his living thatching houses. There are not many thatchers in this district now, because there are not many thatched houses in the district. There is one living in Ballinahow called Tim Tynan and people say that he is a very good thatcher. The implements he used are a knife and a mallot, and the material he used are scollops and straw. He starts thatching at the eave of the house and thatches right up to the top. The straw is drawn and tied in bundles and taken up to the top of the house. I know another thatcher who is living in Thurles named William Quinlan who is a very good thatcher I often saw him thatching houses.Most of the people who have thatched houses get him to thatch for him. A scollop is piece of Sally about two feet long and pointed at the end.

No surname stands out with any degree of prominence. There are 24 surnames among the 82 pupils on the School Roll.
'Gallagher' with 8 is the surname most prominent.
McFadden, McGeever, McBride + McAteer come next.
Surnames commencing with Mc are of course very prominent.
In the school register surnames commencing with Mc are almost equal to all the other surnames combined.

That the Bronze Medal of the Royal National Life-boat Institution be awarded to John Nolan in recognition of his prompt and gallant conduit in putting off from the Spa, Tralee Bar [?] Co. Kerry, on the night of the 7th November, 1930, in a 13 foot boat, with two other men and at great personal risk, rescuing the crew of three, of the S.S "Co-operator," of Tralee, which foundered in a strong W.S.W, gale, with a heavy cross sea. The rescuing boat was swamped and sank on approaching the shore, but the six occupants succeeded in reaching safety.

Perhaps the greatest tragedy that ever happened in [Tarbert], is the drowning which took place bout forty four years ago. On a beautiful Summer's day- the 15th of August- eighteen people set out from [Tarbert] to spend a day in [Kilkee]. They went in a small boat, much too small to bear up such a large crowd.
Before the departure of the party an old woman told them not to go, that some ill omen was brooding in the air but they needed her not and set out. They reached [Kilkee] in safety and during the day one of the party went home by motor. At evening seventeen entered the boat and set out for Tarbert Island. They got on well until they were half way between Tarbert Island and Kilkee. They were then scared when the boat leaked and by degrees it sand. A woman names Mrs. O'Carroll who lives in Tarbert heard the cries of the ill-fated party when she was walking in Back-of-the-Hill but thinking they were merrymaking, she took no notice of them.
When some of the bodies were washed ashore each person had only one shoe on. The explanation for this is that each person took off his shoe to try and

Meat was not eaten often those that could afford a small piece of American bacon twice a week were considered lucky.
Fish was always used on St Patrick's Day and generally throughout lent.
The only vegetables used were potatoes, cabbage, and turnips.

as at present, there were eggs eaten on Easter Sunday morning, boiled bread and milk on St. John's eve, a young kid killed for St. Martin's eve. Tea was first used in this district about seventy years ago, and wooden noggins were in use before cups became common. hen tea was introduced first, the old people did not know how to cook it. I heard of one woman who put a whole half-pound f tea on the tea-pot, she drew the tea, threw away the water, and served up the tea leaves dressed with butter and cream, on a dish to her friends, more used to put the raw tea on a greased pan and try to cook it.

One Halloween night a crowd of boys and girls were on their way home had to pass a graveyard. The boys and girls were all walking on the road, except one girl who was walking on the footpath, when she was passing the graveyard gate, she noticed something white moving beside the gate, and gave a big scream, and became very much afraid, and the boys asked her what happened and she told them. Then two of the bravest boys went to see what it was, and they got a great surprise to find that it was one of their own companions with a sheet wrapped around him.

1. There are very few forts in this district. One in Annacotty is situated at the back of a number of cottages. The people there believe that one of these cottages is haunted or disturbed by the fairies and that the fire irons make noise and even move about at night.

A Holy WellIn the twelfth century the monks were in possession of all the farm held now at Feighcullen Rathangan by P Ryan of Newbridge Co Kildare. In addition they owned more land in the vicinity. During Cromwell's campaign in Ireland, a big battle was fought at Feighcullen and the Monks were murdered and the Monastery burned. All that remains to tell they ever existed is a holy well called the "Duci" or " Dabac" at the back of the present Protestant church.A story is told of a woman who was short of a wash tub. She took her husbands shirt and washed it in the well. The well soon closed up but it burst up near by in the field. This was because of the insult offered to its holy water. An oak cross arose out of it, tradition says

Hurleys were also the same formerly as at present but they were home made.There were other outdoor amusements such as handball and weight-throwing. These (weight) pastimes were practices in the parish of Ballymana. They were often challenged by other players at sports in Castle Waly, Loughrea, Kilchreest and other small towns in the Co. of Galway.

short everything was all right until they came to Léim na hEilte. All the horses jumped over the lake and the man was wondering would the calf be able to jump. However the calf rose into the air and reached the other side without delay.
The man was very surprised and said, 'If I were never again to speak a word that is the best jump I ever saw made by a calf. The fairies knocked him and beat him.

There is a short cut to Clifden across the mountain from Letterfrack. In the middle of this path there is a big stone. When the people used to walk on this stone they heard a queer noise.They used to turn back and strike their feet again on the stone but never heard any sound. There was a pot of gold hidden under the

This was how it was done. A man would throw up the ball, on the boundary between the two townslands, and the two teams would rush in for it. The successful side would carry it off in their own direction. There were no prizes of any sort given, they just played it for the sport.

King Conor Mac Nessa
During the centuries between the birth of Christ and the coming of Christianity to Ireland with Saint Patrick, many noted kings rules over the Gaels. Of those kings the most distinguished was: Conor Mac Nessa. King Conor Mac Nessa was king of the Ulaidh. Emania, situated near the present town of Armagh, was his capital; and there also were there headquarters of the Red Branch Knights, an order of Chivalry confined to the northern kingdom and established to safeguard its independence. Connor was attacked by Maev, the warrior Queen of Connacht, who aimed at making herself the supreme ruler of Ireland; but the valour of the Red Branch Knights saved Ulaidh and Maev was driven within her own frontiers. The story

of this long war and of the prowess of the youthful Red Branch champion Cuchulainn is told in the romantic tale called "Tain Bo Chuailgne" "the Cattle-Spoil of Cooley," composed by the pagan bards of the Gael.
Conor's principal claim to fame lies in the manner of his death. One day, he was seated in his palace, consulting with his druids and chief warriors, when suddenly, the sky darkened, the earth trembled, and the spirits of long-dead Gaels appeared to the terror-stricken assembly. When the supernatural commotion ended, the king inquired from his chief druid, what had caused it. The Druid told him that it was the protest of nature against a terrible crime which had just been perpetrated in the eastern world against the Creator of the universe; and he described to the astonished King the tragedy of Calvary, which he had been made aware of in some supernatural

Another man with a hump was passing by the same fort another night. The fiaries were singing "Dia luain, Dia Máirt, Dia Céadaoin," He said "Diardaoin Dia h-Aoine, Dia Sathairn". The fairies brought him in and they put two humps on him.

XI (4) There once was a man and he was walking along the sea-shore one night. He saw a woman sitting on a stone washing her feet. He fired a stone at her and she ran after him. He had a dog with him and he set the dog on her. The man ran home as fast as he could. In the morning the dog was lying at the door all torn and bleeding.

There was a man one time living in Magheramore. When he was lying you would think he was sitting. When he died they strapped him down in the bed.

In olden times there lived in this district two giants. One lived in Ruskey, Co Roscommon, and the other in Sheemore, Co Leitrim.Those two giants had quarrelled with one another. The giant that lived in Ruskey threw a large stone at the giant in Sheemore with the intention of killing him. The distance from Ruskey to Sheemore was twelve miles. The stone did not reach its destination. It fell about eight miles short. The stone fill in a field belonging to Bernard Shanley, Fearnaught, Dromod, Co Leitrim. Only half the stone is to be seen as the rest of it is buried in the ground. The giant's finger prints are still to be seen on the stone.

Local Graveyards
There is only one graveyard still in use in this parish and that is known as the parish graveyard. It is situated about fifty yards from the old castle and about a hundred yards from Sunday's well and a fine view can be had from it of the neighbourhood around. There is mixed burial there because the church there was once a Catholic church but the protestants took it from them during the time of the reformation and have used it ever since. being borne to the grave was for a short interval laid down on the grass and that no snow ever rested on that spot afterwards. About the year 1844, Father Ned Fitzgerald succeeded Fr. Silvey but was later transferred to Kilcummin probably about 1850. Father Edmond Walsh was then appointed Parish Priest. He was 14 years a priest before his appointment. He was young, vigorous and zealous. He had many and heavy works to do, but as the people were still suffering from the effects of the Famine, he had to defer all improvments and new worked till 1853. He then proposed to build a new church at Lisheen Cross to suffice for the two parishes of Gneeveguilla and Knocknagree. The Knocknagree people violently opposed this suggestion, and though some of the stones for the church had been drawn, Fr Walsh was forced to abandon the project. It was during Fr Walsh's time an addition was put to the Boy's School of Gneeveguilla. Father Walsh was old and blind when he died.
The next parish priest was Father Thomas O'Sullivan who changed his residence to Gneeveguilla while the presbytery at Rathmore was undergoing extensive repairs. It was he also who caused

Rathmore, Gneeveguilla and Knocknagree. The following story is still told about F[athe]r[?} Silvey's boyhood as having recurred during the troubled time of 1798. It was the custom to have English troops quartered in the houses of the farmers throughout the country and on one occasion some soldiers were quartered in Father Silvey's house. In the house was a young cow-herd who cast covetous glances on the buttons decorating the soldiers' uniforms as a valuable addition to his store for playing "buttons" with young Silveys. During the night the two young lads cut off the buttons and hid them somewhere out of doors. In the morning there was consternation when the outrage was discovered. Mr O'Sullivan in alarm, sought to pacify the enraged soldiers by seeking out the culprit and handing him over to them for punishment. He placed all the inmates of the house in a row. Procuring a large Bible he administered an oath to each of the frightened persons and demanded that they should tell what they knew of the incident. Each person swore that he knew nothing of the buttons. Tobar Mhuire is a holy well, which is situated in Tobar village. There are various stories told as to its origin. This is one:- A woman in the district had been praying to the Blessed Virgin to cure her daughter of a fatal disease. One night, she dreamt, that if she would pray at this well, her daughter would be cured. Accordingly, she went out the next day and did as she was told. When she was praying, a lady appeared and blessed the water. From that day forth, it has healing powers. This is another of the stories:- There was an old woman in Tobar and her son was very bad with a disease which is called the "blessed sickness". She promised that if her son would be cured, she would make the station while she would live. The son was cured, but the old woman got old and blind and she could not go to the well to make the station and the well sprang up in kitchen of the house beside her. About seventy years ago and long before the railway between Sligo and Enniskillen was constructed a steamer named "The Lady of the Lake" plied between Sligo and Dromahair. St. Attracta was one of the patron saints of the district and she was born in the diocese of Achonry. She built a house at Cuppenagh bridge to accomodate the people who were passing. She travelled throught Achonry and she rested in many places and int hose places there are holy wells. On Easter Saturday the boys gather up as on St. Stephen's Day but instead of money they gather eggs. When they come to every door they say: - "Guggies for Easter." They usually get four eggs in every house. Then they sell the eggs and divide the money among them.
On Easter Sunday the children have an outdoor feast. They make a fire out in a field and they strive to see who will eat the most eggs. In former days people often arose to see the sun dancing. They thought this was a great sight. They used to say : -

On the Feast of St. Peter and Paul people don't have anything to do with water. They don't bathe or go out in boats as they say that they would get the "Blessed Sickness."
On the 23rd of June bonfires are seen blazing. This night is called bonfire night. Long ago these fires took place at cross-roads. Every person brought a bag of turf. A fiddler was engaged. They danced at the cross-roads all night. Then it ended [?] with a join – they all gave a sum of money until they had the price of a half-barrel of porter. When they were coming home they brought sticks and things from the fire and threw some of them into every field by which they passed. The crop was supposed to be very fruitful the following year. We only have a small bonfire now and no people gather to (them) it.

I live in the village of Castletown. It is about a mile and a half distance from the school. This village derives its name from an old castle the ruins of which are still to be seen. There is an old story about the castle.
About 150 years ago the old castle collapsed burying with it very valuable treasures, such as brass candle-sticks, gold, and silver ornaments, and an old King's crown.
It is said there is an underground avenue about two miles in length. Several attempts were made to discover the treasures but without success. One man from the neighborhood attempted it about 90 years ago (but) provided with lights, and matches but he had only gone a short way when he returned he was afraid of being buried alive.

1. James Grady who lived in Belevire, Athenry, cured absesses. He is now dead. He was about 10 years old when he died. He cured Pat McGraith of Balleyskeagh who is still alive. According to old accounts there were four large round stones three of them equi-distant each forming open of equilateral triangle. the fourth stone was with in the center of the triangle. large black cat is supposed to guard this hidden treasure. In order to get at the treasure you should roast three ducks, place one each of the three outside stones. Whilst the cat is feasting on the three roast ducks digging operations should be proceeded with. It is not known however if anyone returned to try his luck.

There are the remains of an old distillery situated about half-a-mile outside Cloughjordan on the Borrisokane road. It was so situated because it was near a river to work the mill-wheel.About the year 1861 this distillery was in operation. Magherabeg Monastery is about a quarter of a mile from Donegal Abbey. It was founded in the early years of the 15th Century. I was in the town of Tralee on the 29th June and had an enjoyable day, and had a few drinks. Masses were said out in the open long ago. There was mass said under a bush in a field which now belongs to Denis Collins. There are places still where priests hid long ago. It is said that forge water cure warts.Candle are made from fat of all kinds. They used to make candles from rushes long ago and lit them on the twelfth night. They lit twelve candles to represent the twelve apostles. Each person in the house would take a candle of their own and give it to the aposetles name and say the rosary around them whichever ones candle would go out first it is said that, that person would die first. they peeled them and dipped them in tallow. They make soap from fat also. The people made baskets from rushes long ago. The smiths made fire cranes long ago and they make them yet. The people long ago put the tallow into moulds. Moulds are made of tin and they are the shape

In the year 1807 three robbers came out to Lucan at a place where St Edmundsbury back entrance is now. At the aye of the back entrance there is a big house and a family by the name of Swifts lived in it at that time. it was early in June when the robbers came to the house. There was a boy around at the back of the house. The boy heard one of them saying there was nobody in the house and they must be gone away. so he hid in the bushes beside the house until they were gone off down the road , and he heard them saying "we will kill the first one we meet". On the way down the Chapel Hill they met a priest on his horse and when the priest came up to them they said "we will kill him" but one of them said "do not he is a priest". Still

There are three graveyards in the Parish of Dysart. Namely Killcross, Dysart and Ruan. Killcross is supposed to be one of the oldest graveyards in Ireland. Tradition tells us it dates back to the time of Brian Boru and it is situated in a most desolate spot.
Not a head stone marks any of the graves. There are the ruins of an old church in it. The old people say that there used to be bells heard ringing there and also the Cóiste Bodhar used be seen every seven years. After a protestant was buried there neither the bells nor the Cóiste Bodhar were seen or heard again.
The hill opposite Jig's forge is called croc na cille. There are several graves there where unbaptised children were buried. Where the battle of Dysart D'Dea was supposed to have ended there are many graves in it. That is down near Fountain Cross in the field opposite Henchy's house.

When the Famine was in this country long ago the people suffered terribly, not alone in one place but in every corner of Ireland. The potatoes did not grow for them when they sowed them. They had nothing to eat. There was no oaten meal to be got and lots of them died both of hunger and fever. Then when they had no food to eat they used to go out and gather nettles, those itself weren't plentiful. They used to boil the nettles and eat them.
Down in Brennan's field in Liskeavey[?] there were a lot of bliosgáns and nettles. They used to be so hungry that they used to come to it from far and near they dug the fields up in one day.

About twenty years ago there lived a man by the name of Ned Donovan in Newtown-Sandes Co. Kerry, four miles or so from my school.
He was sleeping one night in bed and awaking he heard the rafters cracking and he got up. He was going out the door when the house fell down on him and he was killed.

Mairtin Queally (aged 75) says that when he was a young man he and others used to go out stealing milk on May Morning . A cure for hiccough.
If you have a hiccough get a mug of water and drink it slowly. in a few minutes the hiccough will get better.
A cure for a burn.
Get a few fern leaves and boil them with butter. Then put them into a cloth. Afterwards put the cloth at the burn and soon the burn will get better.
A cure for measles
Get nettles and boil them. Then strain them and drink juice a few times every day till you get better.
Hydrophobia
I'm certain McGovern family from Glangevlin, 10 miles from Leo-baran have the cure of Hydrophobia. The cure was known to fail.
This story is handed down as regards the cure:
Cathaoil McGovern was bitten by a mad dog. He knew he would get the disease. He was sleeping out one night and had a vision. In this vision the cure was revealed to him. He went home, made the cure for himself and recovered. He then practised on others. Once when a patient was being treated in his house, a travelling man (sort of beggar) happened to call also. The traveller inquired what cure was being made, laughed at the idea of a dog's bite being injurious and said he had been bit by dogs several times without any evil result. In fact he ridiculed the whole thing. Before he left however he called for a drink, saw the dog in the water, became affected by the disease and had to get the cure made.

There were two men living in this district and they had humps on their backs . O me day one of them went head on the hill nearest to them . He sat down under a rock and began to sing and when he had finished the song, two fairies came out of the rock and began to sing one said to the other what shall we do for him? We will take the hump off him said one and the other did so. When the other man heard this he went to the same rock and began to sing. This man was lame as well as having a hump. When he had finished the song the fairies came again and one said to the other what shall we do for this man we shall take hump from him, he joined to complain could the not cure his leg also, Then one of them said, because of his complaining we shall put the other man's hump on him

the leprechaun is better known literally by the name of Geanncanach and he is supposed to be from eight to ten inches in height. some of the little men live in condroni rorch, in Ballydurror, virginia, Co. Cavan. They are supposed to cut across on this rock every Hallow Eve Night. and hundreds of such creatures are to be seen. many people are afraid to pass this rock at night as it is too far away from the road, and many strange noises have been heard, at least the old people say so. these little men wear red coats and green caps , and they are usually employed mending boots or playing bag open. from time to time these little men have been caught but they rarely were ever induced to part with thier gold which was supposed to be hidden in the bowels of the earth. a lady caught one of them one time, but she squeezed him so tightly, that he gave her all the monet she could get three half pence and she would find that at the ducks pond.

Shirts are made at in many homes by the housewife for her own family, but a great many people purchase the ready made shirts in the local towns.
Shirts are made for of a very strong cotton cloth which can be got in various colours and is usually striped.
In older days there were looms in almost every house in the counrty, and the homegrown flax was woven into beautiful linen. This linen was then bleached, and lovely shirts were made from it. My Grandmother remembers this being done.
Socks and stockings are still knit in many homes where there are large families but the thread used is not locally but bought in the local towns.
I don't think there are any spinning wheels in this locality, but about ten miles from here I know where there were two a short time ago.
People are now very particular about the kind of clothes they wear on special occasion.
On St. Patrick's Day ladies usually wear

"Bóithrín tobair" is a road which leads to Lady's Well. "Bóthar ráis" [so called because horse-races were run on it] leads to Bóithrín tobair.
There is a cross road near Lislevane which was famous in a poem by Thomas Davis, nephew of the famous Thomas Davis who wrote "the lament of Owen Roe ONeill"

They used put goose grease on the leather if the leather was very hard. People in leonnemare - the women folk do not wear boots most of the year - they wear or used to wear stockings without any soles. Elastic boots used to be worn too - elastic on the sides and they were pulled up on the foot. They were very comfortable the soles of the boots were heavily coated with nails to protect the soles and prolong the wear.

8. A silk ribbon or handkerchief place outside on a bush on St. Brigid’s day is supposed to be a cure for a headache. The ribbon is called a Brat Brighide

The songs the people have are mostly patriotic songs in English. There are practically no Irish traditional songs except those well known like "Oileán Éadaigh" or "Bhí Triúir Mac Agam"
I am giving the songs which I think are rarest as showing the tyoe is vogue here. Most of these songs were to be found at the last of the travelling musicians. I live in the village of Carralacky. It is in the barony of Costello. The village is divided into four parts "Bailliúr" "Baillíochtar" "Croc a Tóirin" "Leath Do Chchall". The people called these names once but , they only call them once in a time. There is ariver in Carralacky which they call "Sean Mucleann". There was a mill there a long time ago. There is a well not for from our house which they call "Tobar na Coille". The houses together in the village. There was an old village in "Ballur". There were a lot of houses together and it was called a "village" that was at the end of the village "Cararalacky". There lived in that village Duffys and Shiels and up near our house is called "Bailliochtar"
There lived Horkans, Horans, Duffys, Caulfields and Sheils in "Bailliactar". In "Leath do Cachall" there lived a man of the "Cacalls" and they called that part of the village after him. There were no people living in the "Croc a-Tóirin" Where the man was on in 1798 the people brought the cradles with them to "Croc a-Tóirin" They hid under the big rock for night. Duffys were more numerous in the village then. There are old castles in the village which they call "Caisil Geal" "Caisil Uí Teine" "Caisil Dubh". It is said that the Druids built them. They are covered with grass now. The Druids offered sacrifices in a field in our lands

There was a terrible serpent in a moat near Cuilcagh who used to eat people an put, threrefore, terror into the people for miles around. The moat consisted of four acres and around these the serpent would twist himself and then go to sleep with his tail in his mouth.
St. Patrick, passing that way, was begged to banish the reptile. He prayed and prayed for strenght to do so -prayed so long that the print of his knees was on the rock on which he knelt. They can be seen there to this day for the rock still stands near where the Parish Priests house is buildt to day. At last the Saint threw down his book and with it killed the serpent and the fear and terror left the people and they no longer shunned the moat. And God gave St. Patrick as a reward for his long prayer, three sinners souls every Saturday night, one from each of the three neighbouring parishes.

One morning when St. Patrick and his servant boy got up to go to Mass, St. Patrick forgot to thank God for the rain that was so badly needed then. That day he got no manna from heaven.
A few hours later our Lord told him to go down to the river Shannon and to stay there till his walking staff sprouted out with leaves. St. Patrick did so and waited patiently in the river for he knew that this was the penance he was to do for his sin.
He remained there until dark. Just then a robber came to steal a cow from a field near by. When he saw St. Patrick he asked him what he was doing. St. Patrick related all that happened during the day and that he would have to stay in the river till his staff would sprout and that this was the penance he would have to do for his sin. "O May God help us" says the robber "I am robbing and stealing and plundering all my life, how much penance will

The tansy is good for worms in horses. The nettles are good for rheumatism. The dock leaves are a cure for a burn from the nettle There is a cure in the chicken weed for a running sore. The way the nettles are used to cure rheumatism is to boil them and drink the juice. The way the chicken weed is used for a sore is heat it in a pan and hit to. gether and then leave it on the sore.
The name of small tree that grows in the bog is the 'Reileog' and it never grew big because with that timber the cross was made on which Our Lord was crucified.

On one occasion on his return from his wandering, he approached the house of a man named O Donovan in the parish of Kilshanny, who may have been acquaintance of years gone by. Long ago people used to make baskets with sally switches. The sallies were planted on wet land. Some of those planted places are to be seen still. It is called on ossery. There is an ossery in Cuttiganstown, and one in Clonbrogan, one in Moyglass. Will Lynch in Moglass has many baskets which he made himself. They were made by twisting the switches in and out among each other several times, till it is the shape of a basket. They used to make baskets for potatoes and baskets for catching fish. The baskets for potatoes were called sciacs. And the one for catching fish is called a storagán.

When a person dies he is waked the first night and brought to the church the following evening. If far away from the church they get a hearse to bring the coffins. When near three or four men carry it to the church. They say the rosery when they bring it in. When carrying out the coffin to the grave they carry it around the church. Some people say the grave should not be made on Monday. And they dig the sod of it on Sunday. The grave is made about six feet deep. When it is made they leave the spade and shovel in the form of a cross over it. The coffin is let in the ground with ropes, also two men stand in it and let down the coffin. There are two men in every parish to dig the graves. Jim Leahy and Michael Boland dig it in Moglass.

Long ago there was a fair held in the rocks in Lurganure beside or school, and about one hundred and fifty years ago it was quite a common thing for fairs to be held at cross roads, and other meeting places. Some dealers still come to farmers' houses to buy cattle or horses, and others meet the farmers on the roads, when bringing the cattle to the fairs, and often the farmers sell the cattle to them. The fairs are held in certain places of the streets called “greens”, and in each town there is a “cattle green” a “horse green”, and a “pig green”. Toll was paid to certain people in each town appointed for the purchase, and the amount given was 3d or 4D a head. There is still a luckypenny given to the person who buys the animal, and the luckypenny depends on the type of animal, and the bargain made. The luckypenny given on a horse is 5/= or 10/=, on a cow 2/6 or 2/=, or a calf 1/= or ⅙ on a sow 2/=, on a pig 3d or 6d, and on a sheep 18 , and the luckypenny often depends on the generosity of the giver. The cattle that are bought, are marked with “heel”, or sometimes a grain of hair is cut with a scissors, and more people only mark them with a bit of first in the street. On Good Friday, the people used to fast till after twelve o’clock, and then they would eat bread and water. They would do no work from twelve o’clock till three, and they would spend their time praying instead.

On Easter Sunday there was a roasted egg given to the Blessed Virgin to cure a headache and that is why the cludog is still eaten on this day. On Easter Saturday all the poor people’s children used go from house to house gathering eggs for Easter Sunday/
On the eve of the feast of St. John the people still light a bonfire as it was an old custom. Before the feast of St. Michaelmas the people used always try to have their hay gathered as on this day the witches used be out taking the butter off the cows milk and in order to prevent this, the people used make rings from

Long ago on the 1st of February, the people used make crosses, called St Brigids crosses from two pieces of sticks and rushes. They used put one of those in each hose and a few in the dwelling house, and they believed that while these crosses were to be had that the house would never go on fire. Long ago the people used go to the town for into eating drink on St. Patrick’s day and they used to call this “drowning their shamrocks”. On St. Stephen’s Day the people dress themselves in old clothing and put on false faces and go from house to house gathering money. They hum the following song:-

St. Stephen’s might, she was caught in the furze,
Although she is small, her family is great,
Rise up land lady and give a treat,
Of you give us of the small, it will not agree

Sore Eye
Take the herb and the daisy and squeeze out the juices from them. Put the juice into a bottle containing milk from a cow which has just calved, and place in cold water to set for three days. Wash the sore eye with the mixture as the sun is setting and after fifteen hours the eye is supposed to be cured.Ulcerated WoundBreak up sorrel, as many apples as would give you a quarter pint of juice. Mix the broken sorrel and the apple-juice and put to the wound.

Paddy, the shepherd was a giant who lived in the Galters. He owned a ladder with 81 rings on it. One day a fellow climbed up the ladder to see the[?] [?]. When he reached the top he got dizzy, and he shouted for help. The giant heard him and told him to climb down; but he couldn't. Paddy had to lower the ladder to the ground to enable him to get off. A giant named Magle lived in the lowland of Lougheed in the parish of Aberlow. He carried a low weight on his back. He threw a rock from Goderry low and in lowland to Baesha a distance of eight miles. He threw another from Shrough to Tipperary.

I live in the townland of Lislahelly. It is situated in the Parish of Drumcliffe in the Barony of Carbery, Co. Sligo.
The townland got it’s name from a fort, because it is from x to stand on the top of Benbulbin mountain he could see a fort and ?? a half circle in the townland. Lislahelly means the fort of the half townland.
There are eleven families living in it, ten of whom are Catholics. It has a population of fifty. There are three families related by marriage.
There are four old-age families:
Mrs Mc Glore, Lislahelly, Drumcliffe, Sligo
Mrs. McGowan
Mrs. Nicholson
And Mr. Michael Gilroy of the same address
Some of these people have some old Irish sayings, but English is generally spoken
The houses were more numerous in former times, as there were nearly twenty houses in Lislahelly about fifty years ago.

4. Footsteps have been heard after death in several families here.
5. It was a firm fact that people should not make new graves for their dead relatives a fact which is verified by 2 women at 5'oclock A.M. one morning as they came from the wake of a neighbour . The family opened a new grave in Ross to have him buried the day following. His family graveyard near Monakilty. As the women were separating at a cross. A funeral coffin + crowd came behind them & women wearing white caps motioned them to leave the way. The funeral passed on to the family burial ground. Both women got such a fright that they got very nervous and ill for some time. One of these Mary Anne Sweeney is still alive. this happened about 40 years ago.
6. On the Cahermore Road leading to Ross on the demesne of Henry Hungerford a dog used to appear and disappear. He had a most threatening attitude and used strike almost death terror to a man called Jerry Crowley at about 12 oclock at night.
7. The spirit of Lord Carlery (The Dummey) was seen in a certain field called the Kennel

I. Máire Gaolach was a fairy woman who used to terrify the people young and old. She used appear at sunset and used be seen on the following roads. Bealad Rossmore Bandon Monakilty Ardfield. This woman/spirit was a terror to the men in the early hours of morning when going to Bandon or Ballineen fairs she used jump on the horse's back behind the riders or jump into the cash. So great was their terrors that they appealed to the Priesto to banish her. After a long and tedious waiting she was banished by Fr/ O'Hea.
II. A fairy in the shape of a big black dog used to appear or disappear to one TTim Brien
Ballinavar at the protestant church gates at Ballinavar again at Sam's Goss and at intervals to him along the road, early morning when going to Ballineen, Bandon or Kinsale fairs. By trade Tim is a pig dealer and no one had recourse to the roads early mornings more than he.
III. Lights have been seen quick recently round about houses in the Bealad district and in and around the chapel of Bealad, near the roads leading to it.

Games I Play
We play a lot of games to pass away the time. We play Blind Man's Buff, cards and drafts during the long winter nights. We play outdoor games in Summer time such as - jumps, swings, skipps, hop - scotch and many others. We have to draw squares to play hopscotch. Then we throw a slate into each of the squares and when we are getting the slate we have to hop on one leg and not to stand on the lines. Long ago the people used to play a game called "buideal fada". One person used to sit on a bottle and put the heel of one boot on the toe of the other. He would have to have a box of matches and a candle by his side. He would have to take a match out of the box and a candle by his side. He would have to take a match out of the box and light the candle with it. He could not stir his feet or put his hands on the ground. We can play a lot of

Oaten-meal bread
About a hundred years ago the people of this district ate oaten-meal bread. This bread was made with hot water, salt, and oaten-meal which was ground locally. When the ingredients were mixed the cake was left in front of the fire on a gridiron for about a half an hour. Some farmers had querns of their own to grind the oats and other got it ground in the mill at Gortgarrigan on the banks of the Bonet. The boxty and potato bread was also made for set nights.

Long ago there lived a man and he was very rich. He never gave anything to the poor in his life. He never helped any of his neighbors, and he never got any help from them. One day a poor widow and her four children came to him looking for alms. He told her that he never gave anything to the poor in his life. At last he gave her five pence, a penny for herself and one for each of her children. After some years the rich man died, and he went to heaven. When he came to the gates of heaven he met St. Peter. St. Peter asked him how he lived on earth. The rich man said that he was very rich and he never gave anything to the poor, only ever gave fivepence to a poor widow and her children. St. Peter was surprised and he did not know what to do. HE called St. Micheal and asked him what he should do with the rich

Gay Brooms
There was old man and he lived in the West. And his loade it was cullip brooms fallen brooms. He had but one saw and his name it was Jack.
And he'd lie in bed until noon say noon. The old man arose and he had on his clothes.
And he swore he'd set free to Jack's room gay room.
If he didn't arose and put on his clothes and go to Wood to cut broom from brooms.

7. When the smoke is blown down the chimney it is a sign of rain.
8. When the water is blowing "up the rock" (Sruth in aye an ard) at [?], and when the waterfall is roaring loudly it is a sign of rain.
9. When the rain is coming the mountain and hills seem as if you could put your hand on then, and when good weather is coming they seem very far away.

Thurmore is my townland. There are sixteen families and eighty-two people in it. There are four families named Connor, and three named Connors. These names are the most beautiful.

A lot of hurling matches used be played long ago in the Lauragh Inch, and sometimes the Ardea men used go to Kenmare to play Kenmare in the Back Domain.
On the occasion about 66 years ago a team from Kenmare came and to the men of Ardea. The Kenmare men came in side-cars (11 miles) and were led by Myrheer, manager of the Munster and Leinster Back. As soon as the men took the field a dispute arose as to whether the match be played with boots on or boots off. The Kenmare men favored boots on, the Ardea men boots off. At length the Kenmare men left the field and so they were going the Ardea men offered is play "boots-on" and they would not.
The play at that time used to be very rough. The ball was the ten times as big as the ball now and the hurleys also. Very often the referee used to get knocked down (if he was in the way) and he had hardly anything to say in the matter. The team that scored the first goal won the match. Sometimes the match would be over in ten minutes and sometimes it lasted two hours. We have in Ardea used to walk to Kenmare, 10. miles, play a match and walk home again.

A man buys a cow at a fair he is seen to milk the cow into his shoes. This is done to prevent anyone interfering with her later, in the line of bringing the butter. He does this just when he buys the cow and then she is his property. (James Collins Tady, of this village saw it done several times at fairs)
It is never right to let milk out of the house without putting a little drop of water in it. Never give away butter or buttermilk after the first churning of a new cow.

St. Derubla’s well of Fál. Mór. Blacksod. Co. Mayo.
The story of this well was taken down from Felix Barrett, of Morahan.
Belmullet, August 1934. Felix is about 75 or 80 years of age. And a farmer, living in Morahan all his life. St. Derubla came from some other part of the country to avoid some man who fell in lovewith her. When she reached Fál Mór, some man asked her [if it] was it with her complexion the man fell in love, and she answered no, but with her eyes.
She prayed her eyes would get sore or ugly and they fell out of her head on to the ground. Where the eyes fell three drops of water sprang up and one of them hit her in the socket of the right eye. There is a well where the eyes fell ever since.
People go there every year from the 8th June to the 8th September to perform stations. The water is said to have special powers to cure bad eyes or eye-sight.
The Station:- The pilgrim must go around the well three times on the bare knees and six times exact. Five palérs and five aves are said when the pilgrim first kneels down. Three rosaries are said while going around, and five paters and five aves are said to finish off with.
When the pilgrim is leaving he asks the saint to pray for him.
