- Once upon a time there was a hedge school near a house in Derrindaffe named Ellen Sheehy. Sometimes they were held in the farmer's houses if the day was very bad and wet, and if the day was dry, it would be held in the open-beside the hedges.
The pupils used to sit down on sods of turf and write Irish and English and other on slates. The teachers used to stay in the houses of the neighbours. The books used were mostly Irish.- Collector
