- In olden times bread was made from wheat. It was growing locally. The querns were used for grinding the corn. They used make potato cakes and stampy and oat meal bread. Long ago enough of bread was made for a week. There were marks cut on the top of the cake and this is done yet. The bread was made in an oven and a griddle.
