- There is a hole on the side of the churn to let in the air. Butter was made once a week in winter and two times in summer. The woman of the house makes the butter. They make the butter in an hour. The churning is done by hand. The churn is rolled. When there are grains on top of the milk you know that the butter is made. They put water in the milk to make it geder quickly. They let off the milk first, then they take out the butter, then they wash it and salt it.
