- We have no churns at home now but we had some years ago. The churn was shaped like a barrel with a handle on each side resting on a stand. It was four feet long and six feet in circumference with a top and bottom. There were four beaters inside in the churn to churn the cream. In the winter the butter is made once a week and in the summer it is made twice or three times a week, this is according to the number of cows milking. The churning was done by the women of the house. It was an old custom by all the people if any stranger went into a house while the churning was going on they should take a turn. The churning of the butter took about a half an hour. The churning was done by hand and the churn was rolled around. There is a spicket(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
