- We never had a churn at home. These are the different parts of the churn, the staff and the cover. Butter was made once a week on Wednesday both winter and summer and carried to the fresh market on Thursdays. It was the woman of the house that did the churning. The churning lasted for an hour and a half. The churn was worked by hand. The churning-dash was worked by hand. The churning-dash was moved up and down by the person's hand.
