- Potato CropPotatoes are grown on my own farm at least once acre of land is sown under potatoes each year. The amount of land does vary because the ground has to be tilled according to the amount of potatoes you have. Potatoes are sown both in ridges and drills. Ridges are dug up with a spade and drills are made with a plough. The were wooden ploughs long ago but there is none left. The local spades are bought in a shop. Before potatoes are sowed they are cut into slits leaving an eye or more in each slit.The local people sometimes help on another when they are sowing the potatoes but nearly every family is able to sow them themselves.
