About a hundred years ago sheep were very plentiful in Ireland and the people used tp card and spin their own wool.The woman that used to do this work at night time and the neighbouring women used to assist the woman of that house.The women used to be talking whilst they were carding,Most often they used to be talking about the faults of their neighbours.This is how carding came to mean backbiting.
