- The Shannon separates Mungret from Coonagh, the place where I live. In Mungret there is an ancient building called Carrig Castle, where a lot of gold is hidden. As the Danes were surrendering this fort to the Irish, they had their wealth in a haunted room. A certain woman was milking cows. Some of them strayed away. She went to the Castle to see if they were there. As she entered a certain room she saw some jewellery. She hung a spuncel on the door so that she would know the room again. Then she hurried off to the neighbours. When they all came to the castle every door they saw had a spuncel hanging on it. The people then knew that the house was haunted. Some people say that the wealth consisted of golden collars, silver brooches and crowns of gold. The story says that the jewellery is worth hundreds of pounds.
