  1. Matty Ba[?] Knockpogus Quinn relates that a very strange animal caused great commotion in the district about thirty six years ago. It killed several sheep and lambs and although several trips were set to try and capture it. It escaped for a long time. It used to run down its prey and when the sheep or lamb was prostrate on the ground it made a hole about the size of a shilling behind the ear or under the tail between the two gamps and sucked the blood out of the animal.
    At long last it was found sleeping outside a burrow in Tooluck not far from Knockpogus and shot. The dead animal was brought to Lord Dunboyns, Knockpogus Castle to identify it. Mr Richard Studdert Hazlewood House was visiting at the Castle at the time. Mr Studdert said it was a cross between a fox and a badger. But Lord Dunboyns disagreed with them as he said a
