This estate was owned by the Arthurs. One of this family became notorious a number of years ago when he attempted to obtain by false pretenses a considerable sum of money from an Indian prince who was referred to as Mr. X. This family was originally Catholic but became converts during the Penal Days. They established a "soup" school at Ballyquin. A number of persons in the locality sent their children to this school in opposition to the wishes of the clergy. These families are very well known in this parish, and when a quarrel arises with neighbours the greatest offence that can be offered them is to be taunted with "Drink the soup".
The Arthurs discouraged pilgrimages to St. Seily's well, which(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
