Nails were made from rod-iron, so called owing to their thinness. The iron was put into the fire and when it was red a piece of it about two or three inches was cut off, and immediately before it had time to cool it was taken by a man with a tongs - put into a shape and after a few blows with a hammer it took the form of a nail.
