1. The Magic Lake

   Once upon a time there was a man who sowed wheat near a lake. He was surprised when he saw that the wheat was eaten. He stopped up by night to mind it. After a while a lot of horses came out of the lake, followed by a small pony. The man jumped upon the pony. Off with the pony into the lake, and carried the man to the bottom where he saw a feint old woman and a young girl. He was there for about four hundred years, and he thought he was only four days. At the end of that time he said he would go home to cut the wheat. The lady gave him the pony to bring him home and she told him not to leave his foot on a sod of Ireland. When he came back to his own home he could see nothing but briars and weeds. He was very sorry, and he said to himself “what has happened to all my friends”, and he asked a man what happened to
