  1. Long ago people would not wear boots and if they were going to Carrickmacross they would put a cord on their boots and hang them across their shoulder. They would go barefooted as far as the Ballybay cross and then they would put on their boots for style, going into the town and when they would return again to that place they would take them off. Children at present go barefoot in Summer and this makes their feet hardy for the winter.
    The water used for washing the feet is usually thrown out and if it is kept in over night the sign of the cross is made over it. There used to be country shoemakers who would make or repair boots. There was a shoemaker
