- The cypress throws its shadows
O'er a little mound of earth,
Where the sweetest of hopes of life
Lies perished in its birth;
Some thoughtless hearts have passed it by,
And lips light music made
As they said with careless accents;
"It is but a baby's grave".
There we laid our faded flower,
Our blossom, out of sight,
Our darling, who, for three short years,
Filled heart and home with light.
But we rendered back our treasure
To the blessed God who gave
And all that we have left us
Is a little baby's grave.
With sad and aching hearts we closed
Those blue and loving eyes
That ne'er before and looked lest bright
Than stars in Summer skies;
And smoothed we down the tiny feet,
That restless music made,
And laid them there to wither
