  1. Shops were common in olden times. People did not need to go to the nearest town to make purchases because there were shops in the country. They were situated in Frayne, Rathmore, Kildalkey and Kilkeelan. Grocery, flour, meal and oil was sold in these shops. Buying and selling was sellling carried on after Mass and is done to the presant day. Many people brought thier needs for the week on a Sunday after Mass.
Money was sometimes given for goods. A lot of the big shops had thier own money for the good of trade. Thier name was printed on the piece of money. Goods were often bartered in this district. Labour was sometimes given instead of goods. If a person owed a bill in a shop and was not able to pay it they would work to repay it.
Words were used such as "Tick" and "change" in connected with buying and selling. If goods were got without paying for them it was said they were got on tick.
