- In Ireland there are many proverbs and saying of the old Irish people, that are still used by the present generation, everyday. Some of these proverbs are very apt and contain a great deal of wisdom. Sometimes the shorter the proverb the more wisdom it contains.
If a person was very ignorant, and did some act that showed his ignorance, they would say "What can you expect from the pig but the grunt." This means that you could not expect anything else from him.
"A wink is as good as a nod to a blind horse." Meaning a word is no use to a stupid person.
When a person makes a good bargain it is said "She does not sell her hens on a wet day."
"Don't buy a pig in a poke". Meaning examine a thing before you buy it.
"If isn't every day that Daddy kills a hare." That is said when people are very gay.
He is too big for his boots." That is said when a person pretends to be somebody that he isn't. Also it is said, "He is too high for the stirrup and not high enough for the saddle."
"You seldom see two Queen son one throne."(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
