  1. On the Death of his Beloved Wife.
    The long grass now waves o'er her head down by yon wild wood side.
    She now lies with the lonely dead the "judgement" to abide;
    The house where aft with song and time she cheered the live long day,
    Seems now as lonely as the tomb at misty morning gray.
    Her tuneful voice I hear no more whose soft enchanting tones
    Can ne'er resound upon my ear nor cheer me when alone,
    Those pleasing notes I hear no more as I approach the door,
    No gentle step familiar yet that lightly pressed the floor.
    The vacant chair sits lonely there, the children now at rest,
    And no kind word to greet my ear, all's silent now as death,
    These tender babes no more shall see a smiling mother's face.
    No more they'll nestle on her knee to seek a kind embrace.
    But other hands less tender for their wants shall now supply,
    Yet few can act a mother's part or sooth them when they cry;
    There verdant fields have lost their charms since she has gone away,
