- On the occasion of the coronation of Edward VII of England a Protestant gentleman living in Ross, Mt Nugent named Thompson hoisted the Union Jack to celebrate the event. A Catholic named William Ahern, owner of Ross Quarries being indignant at Thompson's action hoisted the green flag to honour the memory of Myles the Slasher, who fought and died on the Bridge of Finea in 1644.
"The Green Flag at Ross"
By Patrick Lynch.
Dungimmon, Mt. Nugent, Co. Cavan.
O'er the home of a patriot son of old Erin
Near the famous Ross castle is plain to be seen,
On a forty feet mast in the pure breeze of Heaven,
Our beautiful banner of emeral green.
'Tis green trimmed with gold, with the harp and the shamrock,
That beautiful emblem, our own we can call,
And it waves there as proud as with bold Patrick Sarsfield
