In bleak December in Newgate jail O'Donnell was put to death
His fate will cause in Ireland a pang of deep regret
By the common hangman's hand he died and his soul had scarcely fled
When the black flag it was hoisted to tell is he was dead.
Some thirty thousand Irish hearts were beneath the wall outside
While the men all solemnly knelt in prayer and the women bitterly cried
Saying this poor Irishman is gone as others went of late
And Ireland will for ever remember ODonnells fate.
II
He was born in the county of Donegall, his age was forty eight
When poverty came upon him he was forced to emigrate
He settled in America that land of liberty and he learned to love the stars & stripes, the banner of the free
He never forgot old Ireland her woods or valleys green
He joined the Fenian brothers, who for freedom's sake I mean.
He started on a voyage and scarcely was afloat when he found Cary was a passenger he shot him on the boat
They then took him a prisoner and put him on for trial
For the shooting of James Cary he gave them no denial
III
They then took him to England, tried him in London town
When Carey's son gave evidence, with others for the Crown
