“The landlord in Scrabby was Stewart.”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)The landlord had his agents bailiffs [?] to do his work for him in the district. He even appointed middle landlords who were the "limit" in harshness, and enactions. The Stewarts were without exception good landlords - the last of them Lady Castle Stewart bought and got erected leading into each tenants house very strong iron gates bearing the large letters S. S. denoting Stewart property. These gates still serve that useful purpose and remind the tenants of the old order of things.Michael Davitt visited Scrably and delivered an oration on Cloone Hill during the Land War Days.Bricks were made and burned here but the kilns have now fallen into disuse.
