The juice of slanlus is used for curing wounds. A story is told which shows us the use of slanlus. At an early hour one morning a man was going from Ballyhaise to Ballinagh for a load of turf. At Cavan workhouse, seeing several rats and wounded one of them in the leg. In the evening when he was returning home, the other rats were chewing slanlus and putting the juice on the wounded rats leg.
Herbs were more used long ago, for curing diseases than they are now.
Some weeds and herbs are used for food for animals. Nettles are given to turkeys. Dandelion, chicken weed, horans, lamb quarter, and dockens are cut up and given to turkeys pigs and hens(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
