Brigid McGovern aged 15 years told me that in her young days no one was invited to a dance. The dance was arranged, and any one liked, could go. They went at dusk and left at ten o'clock. There was neither tea nor supper, later hours, nor dress like now at the dances. The girls would not go more than a mile to a dance, and a girl would not dream of going alone to a dance: it would be counted unlucky.

  2. Superstitions still alive in Tiercahan
It is unlucky to either borrow or lend on May Day. People get up early that morning as it is said that they won't think it hard to get up the whole year then.
It is unlucky to get married in May.
It is unlucky to pay out money on New Years Day as you would have to pay much during the year.
It is unlucky to give as a present any thing you win, or any thing you get yourself.
It is unlucky to let out a coat where there is any one sick.
It is unlucky to let out a coal (sod of turf) where any one is churning.
If a person is churning; a visitor must take the churn dash in his hand and give a brash, saying God bless the cows. This is still the custom
