Story.
In the townland of Gortmullen which adjoins Aughrim there is to be seen to the present day the ruins of an old Catholic Church in which Mass was celebrated in the Penal days.
The Church is locally known by the name of Templegurry. Its origin dates back to shortly after Saint Patrick's time, and from that down to the time of the English regime and Penal laws.
Large congregations from the surrounding districts crossed the mountains to assist at Holy Mass in this ancient place of worship. During the time of the Penal Laws the English military razed this much loved place of worship to the ground.
Mass still continued to be celebrated in the ruins under guard of the Catholic congregation, although by English law there was a price on the priest's head.
Some of the Protestants are still proud of the fact that their ancestors helped to guard the Priests in those days of persecution.
Part of the Baptismal Font and other sacred relics of stone are still to be seen in the glen alongside the ruins. It is further stated that these sacred relics were taken away by English planters to be used for domestic(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
