- The principal crop grown in Ireland is the potato crop.
The ground is manured before the potatoes are put into the ground.The potatoes are grown in ridges. Men turn the soil to one side, and put the manure on, and they plant the potatoes. Then they turn the soil over on top of the potatoes. Most of the men use spades in working.
In olden times men used wooden ploughs. Most of the spades are bought in shops.
There are little 'eyes' in the potatoes, and if the seed are cut, each part must have an 'eye'. Farmers help each other in sowing the seed every year.
