- During the years of the famine there was great poverty and distress in this district and great numbers died of starvation.
Most of the people were depending on the potato crop for food, and when that failed they had nothing. A blight appeared on the leaves of the potato plant, and most of the potatoes decayed in the ground, and though they were bad, the poor people used to boil them and eat them.
Most of the farmers killed some of their cattle and salted them, and ate the corned beef.
They used also make a lot of soup, and give some of it to those who had nothing.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
