- People suffered a lot during the famine of 1846-47. They were depending most on the potato-crop at that time, as they used to make bread out of potatoes. They were in great distress, as they had not any food.
Little black spots appeared on the leaves of the potatoes, and as the people knew nothing about spraying, the potatoes were not fit for use, and most of them decayed in the ground.
Some of the farmers who had oats growing on their farms, had the oats ground in the mill, and made porridge and oat cakes out of the oatmeal. They usually kept a pot of porridge or a pot of soup at the fire, and often gave(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
