- We have a churn at home it is about 2 feet wide at bottom & top & bulging at sides.
The churn is round.
The butter is made every week in Summer & winter not so often.
My mother churns & I also churn.
If a stranger came in they churn also as its a superstition if he does not he takes the butter. Churning takes about an hour. It is done by hand & a dash in some houses.
Then there is the end over end churn that is turned one & one & you know hat churning is finished when glass at top of churn is clear of milk or butter.
Boiling water is put into cream in churn to crack the cream. Butter is taken off in a wooden bowl & all buttermilk was out of it & water pressed out. It is rolled & rolled. Then butter is salted & made into rolls. & sold & used in the house.
Buttermilk is good for drinking, it is also used for making bread.
