The houses long ago were diffent from the houses we have now. The roofs were thatched with straw, the people had oats and they threshed it with a flail. There were very small windows in the houses, the floors were made with clay and sometimes stone flags. Every houses had a bed in the kitchen and it was called a settlebed, it was used as a bed at night and as a seat by day. The fire place was in the gable end of the house, the fire was on the hearth. The walls were made of clay and stone. The front of the chimney was made of clay sods and wattles. They used turf heather and sticks for the fire. They
