During the famine times of 1846 - 1847 there lived a very holy priest in Annamoe. There was a church where the doctors house is now. The priests name was Rev. John Gowan and he was very good to the poor people during the famine.
He made a boat himself which he carried with him. He could sail across Lough Dan lake with food to the people in Luggala. Rev. John Gowan died on the 16th of January 1897 at the Convent of the Holy Faith Glasnevin. He was 80 years old.
