- On Michael Dwyer's escape from Bernamuck, (Derrynamuck) Sam McAlaster played a hero's part on a cold and snowy night.Dwyer and nine men stopped the night at Bernamuck, their party dividing into two groups, Hugh Byrne leading one party to a house for the night, Michael Dwyer, Sam McAlaster, Pat Costello, Arthur Devlin and John Savage going to another. They were exhausted with incessant watching, and banished the idea of an attack by the British from their minds. But a party of Scotch troops, led by an informer, struggled through the snow until they surrounded both houses. The first groups of insurgents surrendered, but Michael Dwyer and his four companions started vigorous firing through the window of their house.
