- Long ago, people had no lamps, and they had not a good candle as we have now. The only light they had was a rush dipped in tallow, in a grisset, and hung in the chimney to dry. This, when lighting was only like a match.
Thatching is going out of date now, but in olden times, every house was thatched, mostly with rushes. The men had little rakes and a "stinging stick", for putting in the rushes or straw.- Bailitheoir
