- Up to 50 years ago, tillage was carried out by two methods (i) the "fack" (ii) the "Graham" plough. The land was first ploughed with the "Graham" plough. Ridges were made and oats sowed on the ridges. The furrows were dug with the "fack", and the loose clay thrown up on the oats with shovels. "Shovelling oats" was the term used for the putting of the clay on the oats. The "stubbles" were dug with the "fack", the field harrowed and drills opened with the Graham plough. The next year oats was sowed in this field, and the following year it was "let out".
