The houses are more numerous now than in former years there are not many in ruins.
In years gone by a great many people emigrated to America, and they are still emigrating which makes the population of the district smaller.
Thirty six united Irish men were shot on Fair Green, and fourteen were hung on the pillars of the "Market House" a building which was erected by the Right Honourable Jamesworth Tynte, at the cost of £1,200.
The land around Dunlavin is good, it is not too hilly and there are rivers and streams running through it.
The most important river near Dunlavin, is the Greise which rises in a small well in a place called Tober. Near this river is the ruins of an old castle which the Daynes were supposed to have occupied during their incursions to Ireland.
There are subterranean passages under this castle in which the Danes are supposed to have hidden.
