They got the bone - manure from the bones of dead animals which they burnt into ashes. It was the same colour as yellow clay. They sowed the bone - manure the same as people nowadays sow phosphate.
They shook the bone - manure on the top of the potatoes and then they shovelled the clay on top of them.
