- One time the people had to make their own candles. The wick was made out of peeled rushes. The people left one stem of the skin along the rush. Any grease was used but usually suet or tallow was used. They melted the grease in a thing called a Grisset. They made a lot of them at a time. They showed a very bright light and no smoke They only lasted a little while. The candles were held in a tongs and when the candle would burn(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
