  1. In the "Abbey Meadow" of Abbeydown there was supposed to be hidden a valuable treasure, consisting of Sacred vessels & gold. The only way to secure The Treasure was to dig, between the hours of midnight & Cock-Crow in the morning. Complete silence during the whole operation was essential to success. Several attempts were made but all were rendered fruitless by the fact that one or other of the workers broke the silence. One night, just as success seemed in the grasp of the searchers, all was spoiled when one of the workers exclaimed loudly: "Be the powers, boys, but we are on the pan at last". This Treasure is supposed to be guarded by the form of a hound. On a second occasion, a crowd of men were digging, when they saw a rival party approaching. A fight followed between the factions & sore heads were the only results of their night's work.
