- The houses of long ago were very low. They were thatched with straw, ferns or rushes. The windows were small sometimes consisting of only one pane of glass. The floors were made of clay & the walls were made of mud & the houses were sometimes called mud wall cabins.
The big open fireplaces were in the gable with seats along at each side. When sitting at the fire by looking up the chimney one could see the sky. They burned turf from the nearest bog. Some poor people used furze bushes called "sgeacs".
