  1. Knockroe, my home district is situated near the town of Borris, and in the barony of Killennal. There are about fourteen families living here and the apporximate number of people is sixty. The family names most common are Ryan, Kavanagh, and Nolan, because people of these names ruled the entire district in bygone days. Most of the dwelling houses are slated while many more are thatched, the number of thatched ones is lessening each year, this being due to the fact that the people are getting tired of them and are slating the roofs instead. This is a boggy and hilly district and there is plenty of turf on the hill. This turf is tinged red or a slight brown and on that account the hill is called "Cnoc Ruad" or "Red Hill" and when changed from the Irish words to the English ones it is called Knockroe
