There is an old belief that St. Kieran's bush on the middle of the road from Clareen to Roscrea is to be passed on the left hand side. Most Rev. Dr. Moran, Bishop of Ossory and afterwards Cardinal Moran, Archbishop of Melbourne was on a visitation to the parish of Seir Kieran. At dinner, in the house of the P.P. stories were told concerning accidents that befell those who passed the bush on the wrong side. Dr. Moran could not be convinced that passing the bush on the wrong side had any connection with the accident. As a proof of this he said he would pass the wrong side of the bush, when driving home to Kilkenny in his carriage. He did drive the wrong side of the bush, and at the cross of Ballygaddy (about a quarter of a mile further on) the horses bolted and the shafts of the carriage were broken. The bishop escaped injury.
Rev. Canon Drennan told this at an Irish class long ago.
