Old Trades
Tullamore was noted for trades in years gone by. Some of them I have heard of are:- candle making, skin-tanning, basket-making straw bee hives, nail making, tobacco and snuff making.
The candles were made by tallow fat boiled down and made into candles this was done in the old distillery in Harbour street When the skins were being tanned the hides were brought in dried and manufactured into leather. Basket-making was done out by a family named Brennan of Swaddling Lane The baskets were made by hazel sticks cut in the wood. The baskets were used in the potato season.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
