    The Famine
    In the year of 1847 and 1848 the potato crop failed in Ireland, and caused the great famine when thousands of people died from starvation. The workhouses were not able to deal with the people they died so quickly. I heard a story from an old man in Enniscorthy that they could not keep the people buried and the coffins were the cheapest kind obtainable. One day they were bringing a load of coffins to Monart graveyard when one slipped off the car, and the man fell out of the coffin. He wasn't quite dead, and a kind man gave him some nourishment and he lived for years afterwards. They were buried at the left hand side of the graveyard in Monart.
    The government started stirabout houses which was a great help to starving creatures. A friend of mine quite recently saw one of the boilers which were used at that time at
