- (It is the custom in Wexford to visit the graves of their relations, nine days after their burial, to tend the graves and pray for the deceased person's soul- D.C. ÓhÉilighe) The following story may explain the origin of the custom. Years ago people had to watch the graves of their relations and friends for nine nights fearing that the doctors would dig up the bodies to dissect them, so as to find out what disease the person died of. That was the only way they had in those days of finding it out. One time two men were watching a grave. Some one fired a stone to find out was there anyone watching the grave. The stone hit one of the men in the eye and put it out. It was thought to be a doctor who did it.
