- There was a hedge school in olden times at the cross of Carrig. It was held in the open but the names of the teachers have been forgotten.
These hedge schools were taught by what were called poor scholars who travelled about from place to place teaching.
They stopped in the farmers' houses at night and taught the farmers children for their board and lodging. Books were very scarce and the school work was done on a slate with a slate pencil.
