Ballycullane, Co Wexford.A Celebrated Hedge School-master
"Jimmy Doyle" seems to have been a man of culture and poetic ability.A very old native of this locality says he taught in Clonmines about 70 (at least) years ago. Other evidence * goes to show that he taught in Ballylannon previous or perhaps at the same time - keeping both places replenished with learning. Anyhow,, Fr Philip Doyle O.S.A. gave me the following poem which "Jimmy Doyle" composed. Rev. Fr Doyle took it down from the lips of his own father who was a father of "Jimmy's":
The Five Roads of Arklow!
At the five roads of Arklow three sounds you will hear,The bell of St. Leonards so sweet and so clear,The horn from the castle telling noon of the dayAnd the sound of young scholars at larnin' or playIf you ask my opinion these sounds to compare:The horn is for dinner, the bell is for prayerBut the sound of the scholars with high favour I greetMay it flourish for ever where the "Five Roads" meet
* It is a long shout from Ballylannon to Montreal ! But one of "Jimmy's" pupils a Mr. Hennessy rose to great eminence in the city of Montreal. He held many public positions of honour there
