Point 18. Local Estate. Owned by Lord Ely. The Norman Lords of the Hook, Redmond of Loftus Hall and Laffan of Slade Castle opposed Cromail. Their places and lands were taken over and given to Sir Nicholas Loftus, Lord Ely.
The then Lord Ely was made Marquis, as a bribe to vote for the Union, 1800 AD (Kathleen Browne).
The story of the Devil with cloven hoof in Loftus Hall has been often written.
It is said that a priesthunter lived at Ralph. House now occupied by Colfers.
Lord Ely had a notorious agent in Fethard less than 100 yrs ago. He was named Hehir. He caused much hardship and many evictions.
There are many places in the Fethard area occupied by descendants of evicted tenants from other districts especially from North Wexford.
These places are said to be accursed and the present owners do meet with bad times and ill. luck.
