  1. Long ago lime was burned in nearly every farmer's house. The kiln is shaped like a bucket. The lime that is to be burned is broken up and a fire is kindled in the kiln and a layer of lime is placed on top of it then a layer of turf and so on until the kiln is filled.
It is left burning for about a day and then the lime is taken out through a small opening near the bottom of it.
When the kiln is empty it is filled again as before. This is repeated until all the limestone is burned.
