- In olden times there were very few slated houses instead they were thatched with straw. When the walls were up the men went to the woods and cut down strong poles. These they placed on each side wall and they were joined together a couple of feet from the top by a piece of wood called a collar tie.These were called rafters and when they were joined together they were like a V turned upside down.
